Acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor of cells of the myelin sheath around the vestibulocochlear nerve. The vestibulocochlear extends from the inner ear to the brain and consists of a vestibular branch, often called the vestibular and cochlear nerves.

Vestibular and cochlear nerves are placed side by side. People have two of each type of vestibular nerve, one in each ear. Vestibular nerve transmits information on balance from the inner ear to the brain and the cochlear nerve transmits information concerning hearing. The vestibular nerve, like many nerves is surrounded by a lid known as the myelin sheath.

An acoustic neuroma is a tumor that can sometimes develop from cells of the myelin sheath. A tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue resulting from a mutation or uncontrolled growth of cells. Acoustic neuromas are often called vestibular schwannoma because they are derived from the myelin sheath that surrounds the vestibular nerve.

Acoustic neuromas are benign and do not spread to other parts of the body. An acoustic neuroma can arise from right or left vestibular nerve vestibular nerve. These tumors usually occur in two primary ways. One is a unilateral tumor (i.e. a tumor that manifests from one nerve) which occur randomly without genetic pre-disposition. The other is bilateral acoustic neuromas (i.e. arising on both vestibular nerves) which occur as part of a hereditary disease called neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). A person with NF2 has inherited a propensity to develop acoustic neuroma and other tumors of nerve cells.

Acoustic neuromas usually grow slowly and may take years to develop. Some acoustic neuromas remain so small, that they are ignored because they do not cause any symptoms. Others will grow and can affect the function of vestibular nerve causing vertigo and problems with balance. When the nerve is large enough to exert pressure against the cochlear nerve, then hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) in the affected ear is usually the case. This tumor can be fatal if it is sufficiently large that the effects of brain function. In cases where the tumor is too large, there are several possible routes to take, both invasive surgery and noninvasive procedures.

If untreated the tumor can threaten the vulnerable brainstem. The brain stem is located at the base of the brain and connects to the spinal cord. It is the epicenter of the central nervous system. In most cases, however, the tumor is detected and treated before being large enough to have severe symptoms.
