Well as hard as it may be, you need to make light of it, because feeling bad or blaming yourself or others will only make matters worse, there is no question about it.

We recall that one of our worst anxieties was “are we doing enough” and “are we doing it soon enough”. Well, things could always be worse – is the glass half empty or half full? And how could being scared, miserable, stressed and unhappy possibly make things better?

There is no doubt that our mind controls every aspect of our physical being. There are other environmental factors, but the main controlling factor is how we feel and think mentally.

A child with or without Autism will always thrive and learn better in a happy secure fun environment, it is only common sense!

It can be difficult, however it is not impossible. There are many ways you can turn things around and see the positive side of everything in life and Autism! As Barry Kaufman points out in one of his books – Happiness is a choice! And it really is!

You think about it, your child has Autism – that you can not change, but you can choose to be happy or you can choose to be sad – it is your choice!

Curing Back Pain

One of the most irritating things man has to face daily is pain. But, no matter how discomforting or uneasy it may be, experiencing it has a very useful purpose in our body. It signals to our brain that something is not functioning well in our body and thus we are called to attention for the necessary treatment. Had there been no physical pain that exists, we wouldn’t be able to tell when our bones our breaking or our skin is burning.

One instance that exemplifies the simple usefulness of physical pain is the back pain. Simply put, it is pain felt in the dorsal area of the body. It can have many causes, among which are: the muscles, the bones, the joints, the nerves or the spine. But causes are not limited to these. Sometimes the cause may come from external factors such as being hit hard at the back or the back skin’s exposure to intense temperatures (both cold and hot).

Apart from these causes, there are also many kinds of this pain. It can be divided into two major areas of the back, the upper and lower back.

Cholesterol and food

What is important is the type of fat in the food you choose. Once inside the body, the liver turns this fat into cholesterol.

Knowing your cholesterol level is not enough to tell you your personal risk of heart disease. You also need to know about lipoproteins. These are special molecules that carry or transport cholesterol around the body.

There are three main types:

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – this carries cholesterol from the liver to the cells and can cause harmful build-up of cholesterol
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) – this takes cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver, where it is either broken down or excreted
  • Triglycerides

The greatest danger is when someone has high levels of LDL cholesterol and trigylcerides, and low levels of HDL cholesterol.

What are healthy levels?

The average total cholesterol level in the UK is 5.5mmol/l for men and 5.6mmol/l for women.

In recent years, we have come to realise that to decide whether an individual’s cholesterol levels are dangerous, these levels need to be considered in the light of the person’s overall risk of heart disease.

It is the balance of different types of lipoproteins, rather than the overall total cholesterol level, that matters.

This overall risk is determined by a combination of factors, including age, gender and family history of heart disease, as well as is overweight, whether someone smokes, has high blood pressure or has diabetes.

The higher the risk of heart disease, the greater the need to get your cholesterol levels down.

But what constitutes a healthy cholesterol level is open to debate, even among doctors.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Department of Health cholesterol guidelines, are:

  • Total cholesterol – less than 5.0mmol/l
  • LDL cholesterol – less than 3.0mmol/l

However, the Joint British Societies recommend different limits for people who have, or are at risk of, coronary heart disease:

  • Total cholesterol – less than 4.0mmol/l
  • LDL cholesterol – less than 2.0mmol/l

How Do You Control Cholesterol Levels?

The first steps in treating high cholesterol levels are:

  • Regular physical activity
  • Healthy eating

The latter means cutting down on fats and replacing saturated fats with unsaturated alternatives. There are also some foods that may help to lower levels, such as garlic, soya and oats.

After taking steps to lower cholesterol, lipid-lowering drugs should be used.

Autism

Autism is undoubtedly one of the most painful problems ever to confront a family. The birth of a child is usually the gleeful and most expectant of moments – unless the baby fails to develop the usual behaviors that will attach him or her to the world. In autism, there is no social smile, no need to cuddle or be held, a seeming reluctance in human communication, and a failure to recognize caregivers. It seems as if the baby is in a world of its own, so unresponsive that you wonder if it has been born deaf.

Children with autism exhibit severe and sustained developmental impairments that start shortly after birth and remain profoundly disabling throughout life. The child is disinterested in social interactions, indifferent to human warmth and affection, and rarely takes notice of other children. He is unable to form peer relationships, seldom engages in play with children, and prefers solitary games that involve other people only to the extent they serve as a tool or aid. Older individuals with autism may come to have more interest in social interaction, but they lack interpersonal understanding and have difficulty respecting other people’s boundaries.

A person with Autism is ultra-sensitive and rigid to surrounding changes and will insist that things be done repetitively following just exactly the same routine day after day for an entire lifetime. He eats only a few select foods cooked and served in a particular way at a particular time on a particular dish. He becomes agitated if any difference occurs from the usual pattern.

Do not presume that your child may have autism if any of the normal developmental skills such as smiling, walking, talking or interacting with friends take a bit longer than usual. Most kids will catch up and eventually do just fine. It is also not uncommon for normal children to become transiently fixated on one or two things, such as eating from the same bowl. Furthermore, some children are just not by nature very affectionate and cuddly. This does not mean that they have autism. Autism describes really marked delays in developmental milestones mixed with intense behavioral oddities and a lack of communication skills. Social interaction in autism is so impaired that the child lacks any substantial interest or pleasure in relationships with others. The recurring behavior patterns occur over and over and for a lifetime, almost to the exclusion of all other things.

Diagnosing the stroke patient is usually done according to symtomatology. There can be very minor strokes and may not be apparent to the patient at the time of occurrence. These “mini-strokes” are called “TIAs“, or transient ischemic attacks. The patient can undergo several such attacks lasting 2-3 minutes or up to 30 minutes, on a daily basis, or have just a few over several years. At times a TIA can occur shortly before a complete stroke. Prevention of strokes is of course paramount in a healthy lifestyle. Knowing your body is of the utmost importance and adjusting your way of living to include the following can save your life:

  1. Stop smoking and your risk of having a stroke drops almost immediately. The damage caused by smoking can be corrected in about 5 to 7 years.
  2. Drink alcohol in moderation. No more than 2 drinks daily.
  3. Reduce your salts. Sodium causes fluids to build up in the tissues.
  4. Reduce eating too many fats, especially animal fats and many saturated fats found in dairy products and most junk foods.
  5. Check and control your blood sugar.
  6. If you are overweight, lose the excess pounds.
  7. Check your blood pressure regularly. If you find it high for more than a week, be sure to have your physician check it out.
  8. Check your pulse regularly. If you find you have irregular heartbeats have it checked immediately. The irregular heartbeats are caused by atrial fibrillation. This causes blood to pool at the bottom of the atrium and can cause clots going up through the carotid artery into the brain.
  9. Exercise regularly and stay active. Walk instead of driving if at all possible. Walk up and down the stairs instead of using the elevator whenever it is convenient.

Recognizing the signs of a stroke can save your life or someone else’s life, and even prevent complete or partial paralysis. These are the signs to look for:

  • Sudden severe headache that can be excruciating.
  • A sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes, but usually in one eye only.
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, occurring usually on one side of the body.
  • Sudden loss of speech, slurred speech, or difficulty in understanding speech.
  • Sudden difficulty in walking or keeping your balance.
  • Difficulty coordinating an arm movement or holding an object in your hand without dropping it.

There is now a treatment to prevent the severe damage caused by the after affects of a stroke. There is only a 3-hour window of opportunity in which the treatment must be given, if the stroke is to be minimized. This treatment is usually given in emergency stroke centers. The treatment is an injection of a drug called “tPA“. Therefore, upon recognizing the symptoms of a possible stroke, even if they seem to disappear, whether it is in yourself or anyone in your presence, CALL 911 immediately. When the “Para-Medics” arrive they will evaluate the patient and determine if the patient needs to be transported to an Emergency “Brain Attack” Center. The “Brain Attack” center team is composed of a Cardiologist, Neurologist, Radiologist (for Ct scan), Pharmacist, and a Nurse Technician. This team will determine if the patient has indeed suffered a blood clot stroke. If this is the case, they will administer the “tPA” drug by injection. If the patient has been more than 3 hours in getting to the center, the drug will not be administered, because the window of opportunity has been passed and the drug will not be effective. You can see the importance of immediate action when the symptoms of stroke are present. Do not ignore them even if they seem to ease up or go away entirely. Getting the necessary treatment within the 3-hour window can save the patient untold misery and possibly death. The treatment will lessen the degree of paralysis and loss of speech and make recovery quicker and more complete.
